Price: €2,500.00
The Wanderings of Oisin. Dramatic Sketches, Ballads & Lyrics. London: Fisher Unwin, 1892. Second Edition. In publisher’s variant binding of fern patterned green cloth boards, parchment spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Three cuttings featuring poems by Yeats pasted to front endpapers. Light foxing to title-page & tissue-guard, otherwise an excellent copy, with minimal shelf-wear.
The second issue, one of fewer than 100 copies bound from remaining sheets of the first (Kegan Paul) issue, with cancel title page added. The frontispiece illustration representing Niam, Oisin and St Patrick is by Edwin John Ellis.
Irish bibliographer & collector P.S. O’Hegarty notes “This issue is scarcer than the original, and I have seen a statement somewhere that 100 copies were so done.” In a letter from Yeats to John O’Leary, late February 1892, the author says about 80 or 90 copies were so bound. The second edition described in Allan Wade’s bibliography is bound in green paper boards with publisher’s devise in black on front cover. This copy is in a variant binding of patterned cloth and without the publisher’s devise.
[COPAC records only two copies, at the British Library and Cambridge, there is also a copy at the National Library of Ireland].
