The Lair of the White Worm. London: Foulsham & Co., [1925]. With Copyright in the U.K and U.S. 1911 printed on reverse. Pp, 190. Purple cloth, title stamped in gilt to upper cover and spine, a nice bright copy.
The first edition was printed by William Rider & Son, 1911 & included six illustrations in color by Pamela Colman Smith. This Foulsham edition was printed in 1925, even though the date on the colophon states 1911.
Supernatural chiller loosely based on the County Durham legend of the Lambton Worm. Stoker’s final novel includes mongooses, mesmerism, and prehistoric monsters, specifically monstrous White Worm of ancient Mercia, secreted for thousands of years in a bottomless well and able to metamorphose into a women.
