Published together in 1817, are two distinct novels that explore themes of personal growth, social prejudice, and moral development. Harrington is a coming-of-age story that addresses anti-Semitic prejudices prevalent in 18th-century England. The protagonist, Harrington, grows up with a deep-seated fear of Jews due to childhood influences but undergoes a transformation when he befriends a Jewish family. The novel critiques societal biases and advocates for tolerance and understanding, reflecting Edgeworth’s progressive views on social justice.

Ormond, on the other hand, is set in Ireland and follows the journey of its eponymous hero, Harry Ormond, as he navigates the complexities of identity, morality, and ambition. Both novels exemplify Edgeworth’s skill in blending moral instruction with engaging storytelling, making them significant contributions to early 19th-century literature.

Maria Edgeworth was an Irish writer of adult’s and children’s literature. She was one of the first realist writers in children’s literature and was a significant figure in the evolution of the novel in Europe.
