Founded in 1895, to support Sir Horace Plunkett’s Irish Agricultural Organisation Society, the ‘Homestead’ was principally an agricultural journal, but it also devoted some of its space to the arts. This works selects AE’s contributions to the journal and presents them in two sections – his writings on Agriculture, Politics and Nationhood, and on Literature.
In 1912 George Bernard Shaw remarked that surviving copies of ‘The Irish Homestead,’ which James Joyce had once dismissed as ‘the pigs paper’ would come to be treasured like original numbers of Addison’s ‘Spectator.’
