The Scenery and Antiquities of Ireland. Illustrated in One Hundred and Twenty Engravings, from Drawings by W.J. Bartlett. With Historical and Descriptive text by J. Stirling Coyne, N.P. Willis, Etc. Two volumes. London: Virtue, [1841]. Publisher’s green cloth boards, decorated in blind with gilt vignettes to centre of upper covers and spines richly engraved. All edges in gilt. Vol 1, lacks front free endpaper, occasional spotting to margins of plates, but overall a nice bright set.

One of Bartlett’s best works, each engraving combines attention to detail, subtle use of lighting and shade, and romantic portrayal of the landscape. Scenes are rendered from virtually every corner of the country and include both natural and architectural compositions.

The text focuses heavily on the history of each locale but also includes local customs, sights, and first hand travel impressions.

A nice clean set in attractive bindings of this famous topographical work which depicts Ireland on the eve of the Great Famine.
