Composed of Irish volunteers from across the island, including nationalists and unionists, the division was part of Kitchener’s New Army and played a significant role in the Gallipoli Campaign of 1915.

Sent to the Dardanelles to support the Allied effort to secure a sea route to Russia and weaken the Ottoman Empire, the campaign was marked by logistical failures and heavy casualties, and the division suffered significant losses.
