Richard Steevens, a wealthy physician, left his estate to establish the hospital, the trustees used the proceeds to build the hospital in 1733. The hospital’s seal depicted ‘The Good Samaritan healing the wounds of the fallen traveler’ with the motto “Do Thou Likewise.”

It closed in 1987 and now serves as the administrative headquarters of the Health Service Executive (HSE).
