First published in Latin in 1566 the first English translation (by John Bromley) was published in 1687. This issue by J. Donovan, was the second translation in English to be published.
The Council of Trent was the formal Roman Catholic reply to the doctrinal challenges of the Protestant Reformation. It served to define Catholic doctrine and made sweeping decrees on self-reform, helping to revitalise the Roman Catholic Church in the face of Protestant expansion.
