The Rev. Burke was a Dominican preacher and historian who spent several years in America where he proved a popular public speaker. His lectures in reply to the historian J. A. Froude on Anglo-Irish relations proved particularly popular.
As a strong nationalist, Burke maintained that Froude had seriously misrepresented Ireland’s grievances and that England’s conduct towards Ireland had usually been marked by injustice.
