The second of Farrell’s two books on the history of his native county (the first begun when he was only 19 years old) remains essential for all researchers with an interest in Longford.

Farrell published his first work ‘Historical Notes and Stories of the County Longford’ in 1886).  His was typical of the ‘antiquarian’ approach of his time, but he did assemble a large amount of information. His achievement is the more remarkable when we remember that he was only twenty-six when the second book was published!
