The first edition edited by Richard Barry O’Brien was published in London by Unwin in 1893. In his in introduction O’Brien states that his aim has been to preserve all of the original work (in ‘The Life of Theobald Wolfe Tone, edited by his son, published in 1823) essential to show the character of the man, and give a history of the events in which he played an important part.

The narrative has been divided into chapters, arranged chronologically & explanatory notes by the editor have been added in brackets.
