Seán MacBride (1904-1988), lawyer and politician, was born in Paris on 26 January 1904. He was the only child of the marriage of Major John MacBride and Edith)Maud Gonne. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1974 for his efforts on behalf of human rights, among other things as one of the founders of Amnesty International. In 1974 he was also Chairman of the International Peace Bureau and Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations.
