An anthology reflecting the intellectual contribution to 19th century culture in both an Irish and British context by six Irish women writers: Catherine Alexander, Sydney Owenson, Mary Leadbetter, Sr. Mary Austin Carroll, Annie Keary and Margaret Anne Cusack.

Some of the works reflect typically Irish concerns, such as religion and the colonial relationship, while others address universal concerns.
