Risteard de Hae’s major work published between 1938 and 1940 was the ‘Modern Irish Spelling Programme 1850-1936’.
Brighid Ní Dhonnchadha is co-author of the first volume (1938). The other two volumes are solely edited by de Hae.
Described as a brilliant linguist, de Hae joined the National Library service in 1926, & was appointed Director to succeed R.I. Best in 1940. During WW2 he served with Ireland’s G2 intelligence service as chief codebreaker.
