The book is an epistolary novel, narrated in the first person via letters and diary extracts from various characters.

It tells the story of a young man (Rupert Sent Leger) who inherits enormous amount of money which he uses to help the people of a small country in the Balkans in their struggle against their more powerful neighbours.
