The author William O’Brien was an Irish journalist and politician who was for several years second only to Charles Stewart Parnell among Irish Nationalist leaders. He was appointed editor of the Irish Land League’s weekly United Ireland in 1881.

He disagreed with the establishment of a Irish Free State under the Treaty, still believing that Partition of Ireland was too high a price to pay for partial independence.
