Originally published in English by Macmillan in 1936, as ‘Old John’ with illustrations by Helen Sewel. This Gaelic translated edition is illustrated with five tipped-in plates in colour, and five uncoloured plates by Jack B. Yeats. 

Mairin Cregan was born in Killorglin, Co. Kerry. Politically active during the War of Independence, her play Hunger Strike (1933) reflected her interest in Irish political and social history.
