My Brother’s Keeper. Edited by Richard Ellmann with a Preface By T.S. Eliot. London: Macmillan, 1958. First Edition. Orange cloth boards in pictorial dust jacket. Light wear to jacket, with small portion lacking to rear cover, otherwise a fine bright copy.

Stanislaus Joyce, younger brother of James, was engaged in the writing of this memoir at the time of his death in 1955. It is therefore uncompleted, and ends at 1903. However it gives a very full account of his brother’s boyhood and youth in Ireland. Stanislaus perceived his brother’s genius at an early age and saved him as far as possible from the results of his excesses.

T.S. Eliot comments in the preface: ‘Possessed as he was by the subject of this memoir, Stanislaus Joyce became himself a writer, and the author of this one book which is worthy to occupy a permanent place on the bookshelf beside the works of his brother.’
