Author’s second novel, which dealt with the adolescence of a young man growing up in McGahern’s rural Ireland in the sixties under the control of a domineering and brutal widowed father. The book is one of the first modern Irish novels to touch on brutality within the family and of clerical sexual misdeeds, which led to its being banned in Ireland.
