Regarded as one of the best historical guides to Ireland, The Shell Guide was compiled by Galway man Michael Morris Third Baron Lord Killanin and Dubliner Michael V Duignan Professor of Celtic Archaeology at University College Galway.

On publication Lord Killanin explained that they started work on the enormous tome about twelve years previously. Their objective was to create a fairly complete guide to Ireland covering the thirty-two counties.
