William George Wood-Martin (1847-1917) became Sheriff of Sligo in 1877, while writing history works and pursuing his interest in archaeology. He became a member of the Royal Irish Academy and the Royal Historical and Archaeological Association.

His three volume history tells the story of the Sligo region from ancient times until the late 19th century.
