Author of ‘Irish riflemen in America’ Major Arthur Blennerhassett was captain of an Irish team of sharp shooters who challenged the Amateur Rifle Club of New York to a historic U.S. Ireland International rifle match, in 1874.
In memorial of the event a trophy named in his honour ‘The Leech Cup’ was established & is awarded to long range shooters by the National Rifle Association of America (NRA). A pitcher of Irish silver, wrought in Ireland, heavily engraved and ‘surmounted by a little silver tower, representative of the famous old towers of Ireland.’
