As selected by the author, Opened Ground includes the essential work from Heaney’s twelve previous books of poetry, as well as new sequences drawn from two of his landmark translations, ‘The Cure at Troy’ and ‘Sweeney Astray’ and several previously uncollected poems.

This copy is from the library of Heaney’s close friend, the poet Jon Stallworthy (1935-2014), with his signature on the front free endpaper. Formerly the poetry editor of Oxford University Press, Stallworthy was a professor of English at the University of Oxford and Cornell University, and a Fellow of the British Academy and of the Royal Society of Literature.
