An account of southern Ireland and its principal towns, cast in the form of a supposed tour made by an Englishman. In it Campbell makes various remarks on trade and commerce and advocates a political and commercial union with England. Boswell called the Survey “a very entertaining book, which has, however, one fault – that it assumes the fictitious character of an Englishman.”

First published in London in 1777, the work contains the first appearance in print of the full text of Samuel Johnson’s epitaph on Goldsmith.
