Irish- English Dictionary. Being a Thesaurus of the Words, Phrases and Idioms of the Modern Irish Language. Compiled and Edited by Rev. Patrick S. Dinneen. Dublin: Published for the Irish Text Society, by M.H. Gill & Son, 1927. New Edition, Revised and Greatly Enlarged. Pp xvi, 803, xxii, [1]. Irish Text Society style binding of green buckram, title & Celtic symbol in gilt to upper cover, and spine. A good copy with light wear along spine & slight bumping to corners.
First published in 1904 this ‘greatly enlarged’ edition took a lead from the recently published Oxford English Dictionary, in supplying literary contexts for the meanings listed under each entry.
Pádraig Ó Duinnín worked on the Irish-English Dictionary (first edition) from 1901 to 1904. In Joyce’s ‘Ulysses’ this one-time Jesuit appears briefly as a background figure in the National Library.
