O’Flynn’s play was written to commemorate the centennial of Pearse’s birth (1879). Act One covers period 1897-1909; Act Two – 1910-1913; Act Three – 1914-1916.
An interesting literary anecdote of an encounter between Pearse & James Joyce is related to in the first act (pp44-45). In a conversation with his sister Mary, Pearse says: ‘I lost my star pupil from my Irish class at the University this morning–He’s a young Dublin student named James Joyce. I’ve heard that he’s telling people that he found my class boring and that I didn’t value English literature high enough.’
