Autograph letter signed by Lord Dufferin, to a Mr Brady, dated March 1868, loosely inserted. “I send you a pamphlet I have written in opposition to Mr Mill’s proposals. I hope it may meet with your approval. Yours Sincerely Dufferin.” Lord Dufferin (Frederick Temple Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood) was a British diplomat and rich Irish landowner of relatively progressive views. This pamphlet was a response to Mill’s ‘England and Ireland,’ published in February 1868. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states that Dufferin ‘was consulted by Gladstone in 1869 about Irish land policy’. , ‘An exposition of the belief that both England’s bad government of Ireland and the rise of Fenianism should be attributed to England’s conceit of her own institutions and her failure to comprehend the social economy of Ireland; and an argument that the Irish question could be settled neither by separation of Ireland from England nor by the establishment of a feudal union between the two, but by the establishment of a commission to examine all Irish farms and fix just rents for each.’ Housed in solander box.
