Joyce was involved in the French translation of Ulysses, which in fact had begun even before the first (English) edition was published by Shakespeare & Co. (February 1922). Jacques Mechin, for instance, translated the final episode Penelope late in 1921 for Valery Larbaud’s famous lecture on Ulysses oranised by Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier for 7 December 1921.
It was Mechin who, engaged on Molly Bloom’s soliloquy which ends the novel, added the famous final affirmative “oui” a suggestion which Joyce, after a discussion lasting several hours, then decided to adopt in the original version.
